DIN rail layout and spacing requirements

Proper panel layout ensures reliable operation, adequate heat dissipation, and easy maintenance. This article covers layout requirements for Hybird installations.

Standard DIN rail mounting

All Hybird breakers (RCBO, MCB, RCD), the Edge Controller, PSU, and UPS mount on standard 35 mm DIN rail (EN 60715 / IEC 60715).

Component widths

Hybird components occupy the following widths on the DIN rail:

Heat dissipation

Breakers generate heat under load. To ensure adequate cooling:

  • Do not pack breakers tightly without ventilation. Leave clearance or ventilation gaps as specified in the enclosure manufacturer's guidelines.

  • Ensure the panel enclosure is appropriately sized for the total heat dissipation of all installed devices.

  • For panels with many breakers at high load, consider forced ventilation or a larger enclosure.

Controller placement

Mount the Edge Controller on the same DIN rail or an adjacent rail within the panel. The Edge Controller must always be positioned to the right of the PSU and UPS. The controller needs:

  • A clear RS485 wiring path to the first breaker in the daisy chain

  • Access to an Ethernet port for internet connectivity (every controller also ships with a pre-configured SIM for LTE redundancy)

  • Proximity to the PSU (short 24V DC cable run)

PSU and UPS placement

The PSU requires a 230V AC supply and outputs 24V DC to the controller. The Edge Controller must always be positioned to the right of both the PSU and UPS on the DIN rail.

The required mounting order from left to right is:

  • PSU only: PSU → Edge Controller

  • PSU + UPS: PSU → UPS → Edge Controller

When both a PSU and UPS are installed, the UPS must always sit between the PSU and the Edge Controller. This ensures correct IDC cable routing and keeps DC power wiring as short as possible. The PSU requires a dedicated connection. An IDC cable connects between the controller and PSU, or between PSU and UPS.

RS485 wiring routing

Route the RS485 daisy-chain wire along the DIN rail from breaker to breaker. Keep the RS485 wiring separated from high-current power cables where possible to minimise electromagnetic interference. The pre-cut wire included with each breaker package is sized for standard inter-breaker spacing on DIN rail.

Panel sizing

When sizing the panel enclosure, account for:

  • Total widths of all breakers, controller, PSU, and UPS (see table above)

  • Total heat dissipation at expected operating loads

  • Space for incoming and outgoing cable connections

  • Access space for maintenance (enough room to open the panel door, access terminals, and replace individual breakers if needed)
