Grounding and earthing requirements

Proper grounding is essential for safety, accurate leakage measurements, and reliable RS485 communication. This article covers earthing requirements for Hybird installations.

Panel earthing

The electrical panel must be properly earthed in accordance with Danish electrical regulations (Stærkstrømsbekendtgørelsen). All DIN rails, panel enclosure, and door must be bonded to the earthing system. This is standard practice for any electrical panel - Hybird does not add special earthing requirements beyond what is already required.

Breaker earthing

Hybird RCBO and RCD breakers measure earth leakage current. For accurate leakage measurements, the circuit's earthing must be sound. Poor earth connections can cause:

  • Inaccurate leakage readings (either falsely high or falsely low).

  • Failure of the earth leakage protection to trip when it should.

  • Nuisance tripping if stray currents find unintended paths to earth.

RS485 grounding

The RS485 communication bus operates as a differential signal on two wires. Proper grounding practices help ensure reliable communication:

  • The RS485 signal ground should be connected at the controller end.

  • Avoid ground loops - do not connect the RS485 ground at multiple points if the breakers and controller are on different earthing paths.

  • Keep RS485 wiring away from high-current power conductors to minimise electromagnetic interference.

Controller grounding

The Hybird Edge Controller chassis should be bonded to the panel's earthing system via the DIN rail mounting. The PSU's earth connection provides the reference ground for the controller's electronics.

Testing

After installation, verify:

  • Earth continuity from each circuit's earth conductor through to the main earthing terminal.

  • Earth loop impedance is within acceptable limits per the relevant regulations.

  • Leakage readings in Hybird OS are consistent with expected values for the connected loads.
