This article compares Hybird smart breakers with standard circuit breakers to explain what the RS485 communication and built-in sensors add.
What is the same
Hybird breakers are, at their core, certified circuit breakers that provide the same electrical protection as traditional breakers:
RCBO: Overcurrent and earth leakage protection - same as any standard RCBO.
MCB: Overcurrent protection - same as any standard MCB.
RCD: Earth leakage protection - same as any standard RCD.
They mount on standard 35mm DIN rail, accept standard wiring, and are CE certified (both EMC and LVD). If the RS485 communication or the controller were to fail completely, the breakers continue to provide electrical protection exactly as a traditional breaker would.
What Hybird adds
Capability Traditional breaker Hybird breaker Overcurrent/leakage protection Yes Yes Voltage measurement per phase No Yes (real-time, \~3 second intervals) Current measurement per phase No Yes Active and reactive power No Yes Energy consumption (kWh) No Yes (accumulated, per circuit) Leakage current measurement No (trips only at threshold) Yes (continuous mA reading) Temperature monitoring No Yes (internal breaker temperature) Remote on/off switching No Yes (via Hybird OS) Cloud data logging No Yes (Hybird OS, full history) Alerting and notifications No Yes (configurable thresholds) Load optimisation No Yes (with Hybird Optimisation)
Key benefits of the smart capabilities
Visibility: See exactly what each circuit is consuming in real time, from anywhere.
Predictive maintenance: Rising leakage or temperature trends can be detected before a trip occurs.
Energy management: Per-circuit consumption data enables targeted energy reduction and cost allocation.
Remote control: Switch circuits on or off without being physically present at the panel.
Automated optimisation: Shift flexible loads to cheaper electricity hours automatically.
