Working with existing non-Hybird panels

Hybird breakers can coexist with standard (non-smart) breakers in the same panel. This article covers hybrid installations where only some circuits are monitored by Hybird.

When this applies

Not every circuit on a site needs to be on a Hybird breaker. Common scenarios:

  • The customer only wants to monitor or optimise specific circuits (e.g., heating and ventilation) while leaving other circuits on standard breakers.

  • The panel does not have enough DIN rail space to replace all breakers.

  • Budget constraints limit the number of Hybird breakers initially, with plans to expand later.

How it works

Hybird breakers replace standard breakers on the circuits you want to monitor or control. The remaining circuits stay on their existing standard breakers. The Hybird Edge Controller, PSU, and UPS are installed in the same panel (or an adjacent one) and connected to the Hybird breakers via RS485.

Standard breakers do not communicate with the controller. They continue to function as normal circuit breakers - they simply are not visible in Hybird OS.

External energy meters

If the customer wants to monitor total site consumption (including circuits not on Hybird breakers), an external energy meter (such as Carlo Gavazzi EM530, EM540, or EM340) can be installed at the main incomer. The external meter connects to the controller via RS485 and provides total site-level consumption data alongside the per-circuit data from Hybird breakers.

Configuration of external meters is managed through Hybird OS. Contact Hybird support for setup assistance.

Expanding later

Additional Hybird breakers can be added to the same panel and RS485 bus at any time, up to the 80-breaker maximum per controller. The new breakers are discovered via a bus scan in Hybird OS after physical installation. No changes to the controller or existing breakers are required.

Considerations

  • If an upstream RCD protects a group of circuits that includes both Hybird and non-Hybird breakers, the RCD's leakage reading (if it is a Hybird RCD) reflects the combined leakage of all downstream circuits.

  • Hybird Optimisation can only control circuits that have a Hybird breaker. Standard breakers cannot be remotely switched.
