Overview
Every Hybird breaker has two operating modes, selected by a small green dip switch on the front of the unit. Work mode is normal operation · the breaker protects its circuit, reports measurements, and responds to remote switching. Setup mode is used only during addressing · the breaker listens for an address-change command from the controller or the Hybird mobile app.
This article covers the physical mode change itself: moving a breaker into setup mode, confirming it, and returning it to work mode. It applies whenever you address a breaker, whether during panel commissioning in the Hybird mobile app, when replacing a breaker in the field, or when resolving an address collision.
The dip switch and what the LED tells you
The green dip switch sits on the front face of the breaker. Switch UP, towards the top of the unit, is work mode. Switch DOWN is setup mode.
The status LED is your confirmation of the switch position, and its pattern also reflects whether the breaker is on or off. The LED always blinks · it is never solid. Always read the LED rather than trusting the switch by eye:
Blinking red · work mode, breaker ON.
Blinking blue · work mode, breaker OFF.
Blinking blue/purple · setup mode, breaker ON. Ready to receive an address.
Blinking purple/red · setup mode, breaker OFF. Ready to receive an address.
The rule of thumb: a single blinking colour means work mode; two alternating colours with purple in the pattern means setup mode.
Before you flip anything
Only one breaker on the bus may be in setup mode at a time. The address-change command is a broadcast · if two breakers are in setup mode, both take the same address and you create a collision. Before flipping any switch, look down the rail and confirm no other breaker is showing purple in its LED pattern.
The panel stays energised. Flipping a breaker into setup mode has no impact on the AC supply the breaker is protecting. The breaker continues to protect and switch its circuit normally · only its Modbus addressing behaviour changes. Do not de-energise the panel; the installation is likely powering active loads.
Standard live-panel precautions apply. The dip switch and RS485 wiring are low-voltage, but you are working inside a live distribution panel. Avoid contact with AC terminals and follow local regulations (Installationsbekendtgørelsen and DS/HD 60364 in Denmark, BS 7671 in the UK, VDE 0100 in Germany).
Procedure · setup mode and back
Identify the breaker you are addressing. During commissioning, the Hybird mobile app walks you through this breaker by breaker in panel-label order and tells you when to flip.
Confirm no other breaker on the bus is showing purple in its LED pattern.
Flip the green dip switch on the breaker DOWN into setup mode.
Confirm the LED begins alternating between two colours · blue/purple if the breaker is on, purple/red if it is off. This tells you two things at once: you have the correct physical device, and it is the only device on the bus ready to receive an address.
Complete the addressing step in the Hybird mobile app · the app sends the address-change command. Alternatively, Hybird support can send the command via the controller.
Return the dip switch UP to work mode. Do this immediately after the address is confirmed, before moving to the next breaker.
Confirm the LED settles into a single-colour work-mode pattern with no purple: blinking red (breaker on) or blinking blue (breaker off).
Move to the next breaker and repeat. One breaker in setup mode at a time, always flipped back before the next one goes in.
If you forget to flip back
A breaker left in setup mode does not participate in normal bus communication. You will typically see one or more of the following:
The breaker's LED continues alternating with purple in its pattern instead of settling to blinking red or blinking blue.
The breaker does not report measurements and remote switching commands fail.
The panel self-check flags the device, and the panel cannot progress to Operating.
If a second breaker is later placed in setup mode while the first is still flipped, the next address command creates an address collision.
The fix is the same in every case: find the breaker showing purple, return its dip switch UP to work mode, and re-run the self-check. If an address collision has already been created, see Modbus address collisions · troubleshooting guide.
