Controller reboot and reset procedures

Overview

The Hybird Edge Controller is the central hub for monitoring and managing all connected circuit breakers. Occasionally, you may need to reboot the controller to resolve connectivity issues, apply firmware updates, or recover from a fault state.

When to reboot the controller

Reboot the Edge Controller in the following situations:

  • Firmware updates: The controller will prompt you to reboot after a successful firmware update to apply changes.

  • Connectivity loss: The controller cannot connect to the Hybird OS Platform or the cellular network despite proper configuration.

  • Unresponsive interface: The controller is not responding to commands from the Hybird OS Platform (e.g. breaker on/off commands are not executing).

  • Configuration changes: After modifying critical settings, a reboot ensures changes take effect.

  • Fault or error state: The controller is displaying an error or persistent fault.

  • Performance degradation: The controller exhibits slow response times or intermittent communication with breakers.

How to reboot the controller

Step-by-step procedure

  1. Locate the Edge Controller. The controller is mounted on a standard 35 mm DIN rail inside the electrical panel.

  2. Press the top button for 2 seconds. On the front of the controller, press and hold the top button (up arrow) for approximately 2 seconds, then release.

  3. Observe the LED. The green LED will remain on during the reboot sequence.

  4. Wait for reboot to complete. The reboot takes approximately 60 seconds. Do not power cycle the controller or press the button again during this time.

  5. Confirm reconnection. Once rebooted, the controller will automatically attempt to reconnect to the Hybird OS Platform. Check the platform to confirm the controller is online and all breakers are visible.

What happens during reboot

Breaker protection continues: All connected breakers function independently during controller reboot. They continue to provide overcurrent and residual current protection even if the controller is offline.

Monitoring is unavailable: During reboot, you cannot monitor breaker status, voltage, current, or power measurements via the Hybird OS Platform.

Remote control is unavailable: You cannot send on/off commands or manually trip breakers from the Hybird OS Platform whilst the controller is rebooting.

Local control unaffected: Manual operation of the breaker handles (if physically accessible) continues to work normally.

Breaker state is preserved: Each breaker maintains its on/off state throughout the reboot. If a breaker was on before reboot, it will be on after reboot (unless it trips during that period).

Controller buttons and LED

  • Top button: Reboot (hold for 2 seconds)

  • Down button: No function currently assigned

  • Green LED: Illuminates when the controller has power

Factory reset

Factory reset of the controller is not a field procedure. The controller firmware is pre-configured by Hybird's fulfilment team before delivery. In the rare case a reset is required, contact Hybird support — do not attempt a factory reset in the field.

Power cycling the controller

In rare cases where a reboot does not resolve the issue, you may perform a hard power cycle:

  1. Switch off the 24V power supply to the Edge Controller (via the mains isolator or PSU switch).

  2. Wait 10 seconds to allow capacitors to discharge.

  3. Switch the power supply back on.

  4. Wait approximately 60 seconds for the controller to fully boot and reconnect to the Hybird OS Platform.

Important: Power cycling should only be used as a last resort if the reboot button is unresponsive. Repeated power cycles may indicate a hardware fault — contact Hybird support if this persists.

Troubleshooting after reboot

Controller is offline in the Hybird OS Platform

Symptom: After reboot, the controller still shows as offline.

Possible causes and solutions:

  • No network connectivity: Check that the Ethernet cable is connected and the link status LED is illuminated. If using LTE fallback, verify mobile signal.

  • Firewall or router issue: Verify that the network allows outbound HTTPS (port 443) to Hybird's cloud infrastructure.

  • Controller not fully booted: Wait a further 30 seconds; the reboot may still be in progress.

  • Stale DNS cache: Restart your router to refresh DNS resolution.

Breaker commands not executing

Symptom: After reboot, on/off commands from the Hybird OS Platform do not cause breakers to switch.

Possible causes and solutions:

  • RS485 bus disconnected: Verify that the Modbus connector between the controller and breakers is securely seated.

  • Breaker in fault state: If a breaker has tripped, it must be manually reset before commands will be accepted.

Frequent reboot requirement

Symptom: The controller requires frequent reboots to maintain connectivity.

Possible causes and solutions:

  • Unstable network: Check the Ethernet or LTE connection for intermittent dropouts.

  • Firmware issue: Check with Hybird support for firmware updates. Firmware updates are managed by Hybird HQ and delivered over the air.

  • Hardware fault: If frequent reboots persist despite network stability, contact Hybird support for replacement.

Contact support

If the controller does not reconnect after reboot, contact Hybird support at [email protected]. Provide:

  • Controller model (ICO-C or ICO-CO)

  • Controller serial number (visible on the device label)

  • Last known status before the issue occurred

  • Any LED behaviour observed

  • Steps already taken to troubleshoot
